The Stars took to the courts on a warm, sunny (vast improvement from yesterday’s rain-ended match) day to play rival JLC on Tuesday, April 28. The Stars have been playing, with good success, the Titans for many years. This afternoon, they defeated the Titans, 5-3.
Highlights of the match included 1-3S and 1&2D winning their matches.
At #1 Singles, Samantha Alstott came prepared to play. This afternoon, she had both her own shoes and her racquet bag (yes, there is a story there). She took on senior Abby Frederick, who has now been beaten by at least two of the Alstott sisters (Sabrina won her CHSL semi-final over Abby, in three sets). Sammy played focused tennis on her way to a 6-2, 6-0 win.
At #2 Singles, Loren Nafso made quick work of her opponent, Katelyn Ellis, winning 6-2, 6-1. She played a steady match today, set-up good points, and played with confidence. This was the first time Loren has played Katelyn, a junior, who happened to play #2 singles last year.
At #3 Singles, Ava Tran used the first set to warm up all her strokes and subsequently played steady tennis in the second set, beating her opponent, Kara Lamarre, who played #4 singles last year for the Titans. Ava showed determination in her play en route to winning her match, 7-5, 6-4.
In doubles action, both #1 and #2 Doubles beat their veteran opponents (three of the four doubles players for JLC were seniors!). #1 Doubles Julia Ivezaj and Stephanie Lisch dominated on the court this afternoon, beating Libby Reese and Ella Worthing, 6-2, 6-0. They continue to hone their skills in preparation for the upcoming CHSL and Regional Tournaments.
At #2 Doubles, Brooklyn Nafso and Emerson Yaldo defeated seniors Brea Johnstone and Allison Wheeler (who played together last year at #3 doubles), 6-1, 7-5. Despite the close second set, Brooklyn and Emerson always appeared in command of the match. Up 6-5, 40-15 in the second set, Brooklyn drove a forehand winner down the line to win the match. All four players were met with applause after their well-played match.
Though #3 Doubles, Christina Samona and Anna Yousif lost a tough tie-break match, they should be proud of their improved play throughout the match. They played a veteran doubles team in senior Kathleen McClure and junior Claire Kalahar (who played together at #2 doubles last year). After losing the first set at love (0-6), Christina and Anna came back in the second set, winning 6-3, sending the match to a third set, champions tie-break. The Champions Tie-break requires players to really focus! More accustomed to winning a tie-break when the first team wins 7 points, the champions tie-break requires teams to climb past 7 and get to that magic number “10”. Both teams fought hard, but in the end, JLC won this match, 6-0, 3-6, 12-10.
Congratulations to all the STARS for their continued improvement on the courts!
